Belk, Inc. is the nation’s largest privately-owned mainline department store company with 305 stores located in 16 Southern states (Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Mississippi, Missouri, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia and West Virginia.). William Henry Belk founded the first store in Monroe, N.C., on May 29, 1888.
